Vaping cannabidiol (CBD) is like enjoying a nice glass of wine in the evening. Not all suppliers sell it in the concentrations they claim so take care in your purchasing.
What is CBD?
CBD is a non-psychoactive phytocannabinoid – a chemical found in hemp and in cannabis called cannabidiol. Over the years medical scientists have observed that when people smoke cannabis that has high CBD concentrations the substance seems to ‘throttle back’ the high from THC. Commercially grown street cannabis ‘skunk’ is known to be low in CBD as the buds of the plant are picked before they ripen and develop enough CBD in them.
THC is a highly psychoactive substance that is strongly linked with psychosis. If the state-regulated cannabis then you wouldn’t have so many people going over the edge smoking skunk as CBD is a known antipsychotic, and the state could regulate the minimum CBD to THC ratios in weed, thereby reducing the burden on health services. CBD is such a good antipsychotic it is being used as part of new medical research as a potential future antipsychotic treatment for schizophrenia.
‘Topping up your cannabinoids’
When I hear people say that they use cannabis or CBD to ‘top up their cannabinoids’ I get quite angry. That is pseudoscience – bullshit science. Barring people (like me) who have mental health conditions such as schizophrenia and anxiety, most people’s central nervous systems are in balance until you start sticking drugs in there that the body wouldn’t normally see. The body likes to be in ‘homeostasis’ – a big word for balance. My own system is out of balance in a large part due to genetics and stress as a youngster, but drugs certainly helped me on my way out.
If you want a really good read on CBD, I published an article in the charity Drug Scope’s magazine Drug Link a few years ago on the subject. Download a PDF from my website here. It is a summary of all my understanding and research on the subject, including interviews with top professors looking at CBD. Apart from anything I discovered that going for a hard run, gym session or ride on your bike could give you an endocannabinoid high.
Is CBD a new way to chill out?
I’ve growled a lot in the opening paragraphs of this article. I’ll start being positive now. When I was told by my Dorchester vaping liquid street vendor that I could vape CBD my antennae perked up. As shown above, I know a fair bit about CBD and in my eyes it is a substance I am allowed to take. I have suffered really nasty episodes of psychosis in my time so cannot touch THC. Barring one lapse in France this year, I have been sober 12 years and really shouldn’t touch booze. Forget LSD or mushrooms – I might as well walk blindfolded across the M1 on a rainy night. People who suffer psychosis should not touch most drugs with few exceptions.
CBD however is a substance known to control anxiety and psychosis. I’m impatient and rather than wait on my reliable street vendor to set up his supply lines I went online and paid £45 for what the online vendor claimed to be 500mg of CBD per 10ml bottle.
The kit I use to vape nicotine and tobacco is pretty good. I paid out around £75 in November for a Wismec Reuleaux RX75 battery and tank kit. After some experimentation I have set it on 52.2 Watts at 0.2 Ohms. That gives me enough of a blast to feel as if I was smoking a cigarette. I’ll admit to still struggling to use it instead of tobacco.
If there was CBD in the first purchase, I’d love to know how much. I’d gauge somewhere around zero, and judging by my stomach contracting slightly after 20-30 puffs on it, I’d suggest that the liquid contains a moderate amount of nicotine. I was skanked.
By the time I’d received the stuff I’d suggested writing an article for The Trip Report to the team here. They’d agreed. Despite CBD being classed as ‘non-psychoactive’ I expected a little more of an experience than that of a mild nicotine hit. To be honest, since CBD prevents the body absorbing the endocannabinoid anandamide I thought I’d be blissed off my nut. I bit the bullet and bought the strongest concentration that Love Hemp sold. Love Hemp claims to have independent verification of its CBD concentrations, so I figured that a blast on that would tell me whether CBD has any benefit in those concentrations at all. Honestly they say a lot of rubbish on the site (such as promoting the idea you are ‘topping up your endocannabinoids’) but I had to believe someone in regards concentrations.
I paid around £45 including delivery for a 250mg / 15ml concentration of CBD. I’d had a big week at work and had plans to go to a Labour Party celebratory piss up that night. I had 30 tokes on my vape machine. I certainly felt something. I couldn’t trust myself to drive into town that night as I was certainly intoxicated. I had some fun that night, watching Radiohead play their fantastic set at Glastonbury and listening to the ‘Oh, Jeremy Corbyn’ chants.
Unlike nicotine vaping liquid, the stuff hurt my lungs slightly and I coughed a little more than I might on nicotine vaping fluid though this died down soon enough. A couple of hours after my silliness, I also found that I had a headache that couldn’t be attributed to caffeine or dehydration. The following morning, my daughter was practically jumping on my head at 0700 and I was so sedated I could hardly speak. Caffeine fixed that.
I had a slow day on Saturday. I am an avid America’s Cup fan and watched the racing on TV. My internet connection went down just as Oracle Team USA started to come at my favoured team Emirates Team New Zealand. You might experience similar emotions should England be playing in the World Cup finals and the same thing happens. The CBD didn’t stop me from getting bloody angry and behaving like my two year old daughter when denied her paints.
I suffer social anxiety and yesterday took my family to meet some new friends. On the beach, hanging out, I felt a wee bit tense so had four tokes on the vaping machine. It took my edginess away. The sojourn was relaxed and fun.
The reason I haven’t named the supplier of the bottle of non-CBD oil is that Google has a habit of ignoring anything critical to specific names under EU defamation law. Suffice to say it was a Bath, England based firm. You really should take care in buying the stuff, but I couldn’t tell you how to take such care as before buying the blue bottle, I’d spent an hour making my decision and still ended up being skanked. The other supplier turned out to be good.
If you want to get caned off your bollocks there are cheaper ways. If like me you want to chill out or take the edge off your anxiety (much in the same way people do with a glass of wine or two), then CBD may be the answer. For my part I have found something that may help long term. I am very pleased with what I have found.
