The Silk road is a historical network of trade routes across Asia and western Europe that grow around 114BC and which were the main carrier of silk from china to the rest of the world however this is not the Silk Road we are interested in.
This silk road is famous for mainly one thing, Drugs. Not drug information either but the sale of actual illegal narcotics such as heroin, cocaine, LSD and cannabis.
To most this website is just a myth and to others its there ‘local’ hook up spot for their weekend party supplies or mid-week smoking session.
This is not a brand new site, In fact it has been on the go since February 2011 and is now shifting over 1.2million US dollars worth of mainly illegal products every month. This huge figure completely dwarfs that of The Farmers Market which is a similar ‘website’ which was shut down by American police and made the headlines as it was suspected of doing over $1million worth of transactions between January 2007 and October 2009.
Your probably wondering why its not been shut down yet and the simple answer is no-one is able too. Silk road is not ran on the regular word wide web that The Trip Report is ran on it is ran on software called Tor which stands for The Onion Router and is a system which enables online anonymity by routing encrypted internet traffic via users servers to make tracing a user virtualy impossible using even the most advanced tracking tools available.
The Farmers Market was also ran on the Tor network however it used encrypted mail providers such as hushmail who later decrypted their e-mails which led police to the ring men. The Farmers Market also used traceable payment services such as Western Union and Paypal to take payment from customers which is believed to be another way that American police were able to shut down the website.
Anyone can join the site to buy products but to become a seller it is a bit harder and Silk Road are known to be cracking down on how many new sellers are getting approved.
After joining you will need to get your hands on Bit Coins which is the only currency used on Silk Road which is also an anonymous currency and is also quite hard to get a hold of but there are plenty websites on the normal web that will exchange USD or GBP for Bit Coins however the value has been inflating causing the products on the site to become more expensive in real money.
Once you have got some Bit Coins you are now able to buy products from the huge selection of sellers most of which are based in the UK, USA or Holland. Most of the products on silk road are very high quality and each seller has a feedback section and score just like you would on eBay.
There is more than just drugs for sale on Silk Road there is everything from porn website rips, books on hydroponics, hand made jewelry, forged drivers licenses to of course cannabis, heroin and cocaine all available with just a click of the mouse and once you have decided what product to buy and made an order with a seller you transfer the Bitcoins to their account and within a few days depending on where it is coming from you will receive your order well packaged.
A couple other websites have wrote articles about Silk Road and with the media attention the cost of bit coins have risen and also the DEA in America have insisted that Silk Road be shit down by saying:
