A scene straight out of a movie unfolded at the Los Angeles international airport, and it wasn’t from ‘Cinderella’ despite featuring a beauty on the run, a lost shoe and er.. 30kg of cocaine.
Authorities seized 30 kilograms of cocaine during an airport incident that would be comical unless it was deadly serious. A woman working as a flight attendant on one of the outgoing flights scheduled from Los Angeles was randomly chosen for detailed screening, but rather than comply with the instructions, she made a quick phone call in a foreign language, and then ran away from the surprised officials. Along the way, she was forced to leave her designer shoes behind, continuing the daring escape barefoot and somehow managing to evade capture in the immediate aftermath.
When the airport authorities checked the carry-on luggage she abandoned, they realized why the woman was so terrified of being checked. With 66 pounds of cocaine inside the bags, she would have been in serious trouble had she been detained at the airport. Her identity and employer are known to the DEA, but this info was not publically released in the interest of the investigation. It looks obvious that the flight attendant was used simply as a carrier for one of the deep-pocketed organizations involved in cocaine trade, but it’s difficult to guess which ones without knowing more details.
To put things in perspective, 30 kilos of relatively pure product would be worth millions in the streets and requires a well-established distribution network to cash in. Use of flight attendants to usher the merchandise through airports is nothing new, although in the current security-obsessed climate it might be more difficult to pull off similar capers now. In fact, it is mildly shocking that the incriminated woman was able to get away at all given the sheers number of security guards on duty – on high heels or not.
